You may have seen that Amazon have recently launched a Workspace (Remote Desktop) service based around Windows Server 2008R2 and Teradici's PCoIP
You may be asking why ours is better and worth £75 pcm when they're charging $75 for "the same thing" ... well here are just a few reasons
1) It isn't the same thing by any means ..
Our service includes hosted collaborative email based on the Fido Apps service. With which you get synchronised Contacts, Calendars, eMail and Tasks. You get push email / ActiveSync support to keep your contacts, calendars and emails all in sync on your Android / Apple devices. This also includes Anti Virus and Spam Filtering on our Corporate "SpamCloud" service. We also include regular daily backups of your desktop workspace as standard.
You also get Microsoft Office 2010 (or 2013 if you're brave! :) which includes Word, Excel, Outlook and Powerpoint as standard.
Most customers use our service as a shared / collaborative environment with a database server and shared file access. They use our service as a workgroup environment with multiple staff in the same (often distributed) office environment.
The Amazon service is a single desktop environment which means you don't necessarily have a single shared folder space to work from. You would also need an additional desktop environment specifically for your database application which again adds to the costs ...
2) Yours is £75 per user, they're saying $75 per month
Yes, but their $75 per month is per user too. And you don't get all the extra features I've eluded to above such as collaborative email, online backups, shared storage, mobile sync and more.
3) They are using S3 for storage, surely that's better!?
Not necessarily. S3 is a cloud based storage service yes - but so is our service. Where our service is better is that it is a) definitely more secure. You can only access our data stores through the virtual desktop environment. Your data is stored in the UK on our servers, Amazon's S3 cloud is worldwide and whilst you can elect for a European store with S3 currently you can't do this with their Workspace service. This means your customer data is being exported to the US - which breaks several EU data protection laws.
Our service includes regular backups of your entire environment as standard - including your emails. Amazon's does not. Our backup service takes snapshots at regular intervals and allows you to restore individual files or the entire virtual machine quickly.
5) Hardware Acceleration
Whilst PCoIP performs some acceleration, we are using Microsoft's own RemoteFX advanced video acceleration services. This is fully supported in the Remote Desktop application which ships with every Windows machine by default. It is also supported on the Mac, iPad, etc by both Microsoft and 3rd party vendors such as iTap Mobile which we strongly recommend for Mac users
6) UK Based Support
Add to all of these plus points the fact that we operate UK support and have specialist engineers who know the product inside and out, and you can see why FidoNet's workspace solutions are so much better than the Amazon equivalent - and in fact cheaper when you factor in all the value adds that we include as standard in the product.
So you will see that you really aren't getting the same thing, and whilst on the surface Amazon's product may seem to be cheaper, by the time you've added the costs of email hosting, backup services and so on you're paying closer to $100 - $120 per month per user (plus the cost of an additional Workspace for your database application if necessary) so our £75 is actually great value for money! - But it is nice to see that Amazon want to try and beat us at something we've been doing for 15 years already ...
